Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
323 AM PST Fri Dec 27 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Active weather will bring rain, mountain snow, and breezy to
gusty southerly winds into the weekend. Drier weather is expected
into next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Light showers continue to bring precipitation to interior NorCal
early this morning (as of 300AM) as a weather system makes its
way through the area. Gusty southerly winds are also being
observed across the Valley with gusts 35 to 45 mph increasing
from Sacramento northward. As such a Wind Advisory continues to be
in effect this morning until 10 AM. Predominantly liquid
precipitation is currently falling over the Sierra where snow
levels are sitting between 6500-7500 feet and up to 5 inches of
wet snow are expected above 6000 feet this morning. Likewise, our
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon today.

Scattered light showers (mainly over Shasta County and the Sierra
foothills/mountains) and breezy winds will linger through today
as precipitation moves out of the area. Snow levels will rise
above 7500 by late morning, resulting in liquid precipitation and
slippery roads over the Sierra. There will be a lull in
precipitation this afternoon before the next wave pushes through
tonight into Saturday. Precipitation will be mainly over Shasta
County, the foothills, and mountains with snow levels above 8000
feet and a few isolated Valley showers through Saturday.

On Sunday, yet another push of moisture will bring more rain,
gusty southerly winds, and colder air. Snow levels will initially
sit around 7000 feet before lowering that afternoon to 5000 to
6000 feet by Sunday afternoon. Currently there is a 30 to 50%
chance of snow accumulations exceeding 4.00 inches above 6000
feet. Highest rainfall accumulations will once again be over
Shasta County and the foothills/mountains. Southerly winds will
begin to pick up Saturday night across the northeastern Sierra
foothills and the northern Sacramento Valley with gusts 25 to 35
mph, before expanding further down south later Sunday morning.
The NBM shows a 60 to 90% chance of gusts exceeding 40 mph
generally north of I-80 in the Valley. There is also a marginal
chance (10-15%) for isolated Valley and foothill thunderstorms
Sunday afternoon behind the frontal passage.

Overall for precipitation amounts through the weekend, the NBM
projects a 60 to 90% chance of rainfall amounts exceeding 2.00"
over Shasta County, the foothills, and the mountains. In the
Valley, the majority of rainfall will fall on Sunday, but over the
next three days there is a 60 to 90% chance of exceeding 1.00" of
rain north of I-80 and 30 to 50% chance south of I-80.

By Monday, Sunday`s system will have ejected to the east resulting
in breezy northerly flow through the Valley with gusts 15 to 25
mph. Conditions are then dry out as ridging builds over the
Pacific Northwest.

Please continue to check weather.gov/sto for the latest updates
and check quickmap.dot.ca.gov before you go this holiday season!

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Tuesday THROUGH Friday)...

Models showing interior NorCal will be under the influence of
building upper level ridging through the extended forecast
period. High temperatures will be near to slightly above normal
with chilly nights. Potential for some patchy overnight fog or
frost in the Central Valley Tuesday and Wednesday. NBM continuing
to show potential for some precip over northern portions of the
CWA late in the week, however confidence in this is low given
progged synoptic pattern.

&&
